YOUR PAYROLL ADDRESS
The NC A&T Payroll Department uses the address on
the employee's initial W-4 for paychecks, earnings statements (W-2), and
any other payroll mail. This address and W-4 information is obtained by
the Benefits Office during the initial (new) employee orientation.
Employees must document address changes at the University
Benefits Office, 1020 E. Wendover Ave by completing a Change of Address
form. Employees may not use an NC A&T departmental address as their
payroll address.
Student employees must document address changes at the
Payroll Department, 214 Dowdy Administration Building by completing an
updated Change of Address form. Notifying the University Registrar of address
changes does not authorize a payroll change.
W-4 AND WITHHOLDING FEDERAL INCOME TAX
An employee must complete, sign, and submit to the Payroll
Department a W-4 form (Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate) before
Payroll Services makes any salary or wage payments. This W-4 information
is initially obtained by the Benefits Office during the new employee's
orientation.
The employee declares a correct address and social security
number, the IRS filing status, and the number of withholding allowances
or the percent of income to withhold on the W-4 form. The Payroll Department
uses this information to compute the amount to withhold from the employee's
taxable gross salary, as well as the address to mail any payroll related
correspondence. An incomplete W-4 will require a "single, no exemption"
rate to be applied--the highest level of withholding available.
Because an individual's tax status can change frequently, it is beneficial for an employee to update withholding information when the need arises. The IRS will impose penalties for withholding too little of the ultimate taxes owed annually, but also many individuals do not want to have too much withheld needlessly. Examples of a tax status change might be:
Changes in withholding allowances may be made quickly
and easily at any time by completing a revised W-4. The forms are available
in our Payroll Department, 214 Dowdy Administration Bldg. or the University
Benefits Office, 1020 E. Wendover Ave.
Employees may change their payroll address at the Payroll Department, 214 Dowdy Administration Building by completing an updated W-4 form. Withholding adjustments are also made by completing an updated W-4.
