SECTION IV

PROCEDURE TO APPLY FOR AN ITIN

To apply for an ITIN, the NRA completes a Form W-7 and brings it with two forms of identification to the local IRS Office. The IRS office will verify the W-7 has been correctly completed and that the forms of identification are valid. Examples of acceptable forms of identification would be: a passport, U.S. immigration documents, driver's license, or a birth certificate. The local IRS office recommends a passport as a form of photo ID. The local IRS office will send the completed Form W-7 to the IRS processing center in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia office will then issue the ITIN.

To speed the process, insert the name of the NC A&T campus department and its address on line three of the Form W-7. When the Philadelphia office has approved the ITIN, it will mail the information to that address. Then the campus department can insert this number on the otherwise completed Form 8233. The now completed Form 8233 and the other required documentation can be forwarded to the Accounting Office.

The ITIN can also be applied for at certain U.S. consular offices abroad. If a consular office is within proximity, the visiting NRA may apply at the consular office before visiting the U.S.

The Form W-7 infers that the NRA should receive the ITIN within 14 days. However, the local IRS office indicated that the process will take six to eight weeks.
